diy

I’ve been spending a fair amount of time at my computer lately. Which basically means that I have done the most minimal of get ready-ing this week, as possible. Jeans, t-shirts, slippers, no makeup, and barely a brush through my hair. During the day, I’ve been writing. A lot. More than I ever thought I could or would on a topic that I’m quickly learning is my passion. But this weekend, I think it’s time to get out of the house. You know it’s time when your husband specifically asks you, “When did you leave the house last?” and you reply with a serious straight face, “I don’t know.. maybe two or three days ago?” Sad news. I’ve been in a bit of a tunnel lately. A tunnel I like to be in.

This weekend, he’s forcing me out of the house. Something of which I’ll gladly oblige. Tonight, we’re going to have “game night.” Which I realize is completely cheesy, but if it’s not planned, then I will resort to the computer or staring at the TV watching movies all evening. I’ll be honest, we’re having game night alone. What? We’re married 20-something’s and aren’t hip and with it. I’m just keeping it real. I’m a grandma that doesn’t leave the house and would rather be knitting a hat on Friday night while baking cookies, while my husband would rather be reading books or “catching up on tech news.” Snooze. I know.

Tomorrow, we’re going to take a short little road trip… in the opposite direction of Seattle, because the news is calling it “one of the worst traffic weekends this year.” Something about President Obama coming to town mixed with road construction and yadda yadda. We’re going to do some lazy wandering around of the giant outlet stores about an hour from our home. It will be nice to just get out of the house if nothing else. When I was in college, and my husband was living where we are now, we would often meet there as a half way point on the weekends or even mid-week just to say hello for an hour or two. So every time we return, it’s a nice reminder that we made it out of that period of our relationship that we both desperately wish never happened.

What are you up to this weekend? Have any plans to peel away from work?

Friday Faves

August 12, 2011

Although it’s already two Fridays into August, it feels like summer has just arrived around here. We’ve had more than 5 days of sun in a ROW, so I’d call that summer! This week I was inspired by some of the beautiful oranges and salmon colors that tend to come out this time of year.

Strawberry Pillows: These cute pillows are so fun for the summer time. My niece had a strawberry themed birthday party last fall, so these would be right up her alley. Check out the cute tutorial to make these fun little poofs yourself.

Popsicle Business Cards: Seriously? These are the cutest things ever. And they have perforated edges so you can break them in half just like the popsicles normally do so you can share with a friend. I’m in love. Photo Source

Tape-Lined Votives: Man, that Martha and her crew are good. These are really a simple, but lovely accessory that I’d love to DIY and have on my table for any summer dinner. You can find the full tutorial here.

Button Art: This art is so cheery and I think it would be a fun addition to a gallery wall that I’ve been dreaming up for the hallway into our main living space. I have a ton of vintage buttons laying around from my grandma’s stash, so this would be a fun way to display all the really fun and funky ones. Photo Source

Champagne Sweet Treats: I feel like with the introduction of Friday Faves, I’m constantly sharing those “wow, why didn’t I think of that??” moments that I come across. But really… why didn’t I think of this? Dunking fruity popsicles in bubbly champagne – now that sounds like a good pool party treat! Photo Source

Have a great weekend!

Friday Faves

July 29, 2011

I’ve got to tell you, this summer so far has been a little bit disappointing. We’ve had  a few sunny days, but not as many as we should have. Now that it’s almost August, I’m hoping (and praying and crossing my fingers… and toes) that the sun decides to come out and cheer up this dreary little Northwest corner of the US that is being left out of the news-making scorcher everyone else is going through. Here are some of the things that have kept me smiling during this “bummer summer” so far.

The Kennedys Mini-Series: My husband and I watched this over the course of a few dreary weekends and it. is. so. good. I love dramas that are created off of real-life people and events. Fascinating take on what could have been during that time frame in that family. Photo Source.

DIY Rubber Stamps: I just recently saw this DIY article and think I’ll have to give them a try. The look like such a quick and fun little craft project that you can pick up super cheap supplies for and have unique cards or wrapping paper in just a short time.

New season of Flipping Out: I love this show. It is always so hilarious and fascinating at the same time. It never ceases to amaze me how eccentric and wildly crazy Jeff Lewis (and his staff) is. Photo Source.

Easy Lollipop Tutorial: I came across this tutorial last week and thought.. oh, why didn’t I think of that.. I have a bag of root beer flavored hard candies sitting in my kitchen calling my name right now for this project!

Yoga: Since the weather has been meh, I’ve made sure I’m still moving and found my way back to yoga again. I always forget how much I love to do it. I’ve never been to a class, but follow along some exercise DVD’s or just do it without instruction. It’s one of those few things that get me back in a great mood whatever the weather is like. Happy Friday, friends! Hope you have a great weekend!

Pinning Down Genius

July 12, 2011

Every time I visit Pinterest, I’m amazed at some of the ingenius things people have come up with. I don’t know why I’m surprised, there are some very crafty folks out there – but there are sometimes when I’m literally just floored with some of the things I find on there. I thought it would be fun to share 10 of my favorite “Oh man, why didn’t I think of that before??” finds from the last few weeks.

Friday Faves

June 24, 2011

Now that we’ve been in our first place for a week and the weather has been sunny, I’m already thinking of ways that we can spruce up our little patio balcony off our living room. Here are a couple of my Friday Faves devoted just to outdoor living.

DIY Wine Bottle Candle Holders: These are so beautiful and I think they would be a lovely addition to an evening dinner outside. Photo Source

Ginger-Ale with Strawberries: Perfectly refreshing drink for a warm day and a nice lounge session with a good book. Photo Source

Space Saving Patio Furniture: My husband and I saw these while out the other weekend and think they might just be the coolest thing we’ve seen in a while. Not only are they a good price, but they’re space savers for our tiny little balcony! The footstools tuck away when you’re not using them, but pull out for easy reclining! Home Loft 5-piece Wicker Chat Set – Brown, Amazon, $379.24

DIY Container Gardens: I love the colorful buckets and the simplicity of bringing a small garden to your outdoor space. I love to grow my own herbs and think this is a perfect solution! Source

Stacking Orange Wine Glasses: Another space saving solution – stacking wine glasses in a gorgeous color! Plus, they’re acrylic which means if the party gets too fun, a dropped glass won’t make a mess. Set of 4 Stacking Acrylic Wine Glasses, Crate and Barrel, $9.95.
